Among the heat, the bugs, and the Southern style food, you can find the Diversity Peer Educators at Georgia College. Under the Office of Inclusive Excellence (the one across from Financial Aid), there are eleven dedicated people with the goal of educating our campus and bettering the cultural climate. This team works together to provide events for the community on a wide variety of topics such as well-known ones like sexual orientation, race, gender, and ethnicity. However, they also talk about lesser known topics like age, ability, religion, and socioeconomic status.
Our mission is to improve inclusivity on the GC campus through peer education and advocacy on issues of diversity in order to create an environment which celebrates diversity and intersectionality. We believe when students learn from their peers, their minds become more open and receptive. We aim to create a conversation among students of all backgrounds to foster respect and a deeper understanding of each other. We are choosing to not just open the dialogue, but to have the dialogue. We want to create a space where people can make mistakes because we believe that is how we learn and how progress is made. Through education, we can have the greatest impact on changing the mindsets and stereotypes often seen in the South. There are many great events lined up for the semester, so stay tuned and we'll see you next week!
